130 manuscript maps executed as part of an exhaustive land survey commissioned by the Iowa Central Air Line Railroad, also known as the "Calico Railroad," the "Lyons and Iowa Central Railroad" and the "Race to Council Bluffs." The map leaves are interleaved with ledger sheets offering exact dimensions and short descriptions of the quality of the land. These maps are organized by township, with proposed routes, important township lines, rivers, and certain plots outlined in color. Numerous features of the railroad territory and nearby land are labeled, such as Indian Reservations, swamps, rolling prairie, and farms.
